By incorporating aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn), the performance of high-nickel ternary materials, such as NMC (nickel-cobalt-manganese) or NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum), is improved. This modification helps reduce cobalt content, which lowers costs and enhances thermal stability.

NMCA quaternary materials (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum) achieve a balance between energy density, cycle life, and thermal safety through the coordinated optimization of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum. They are considered a crucial direction for the next generation of high-nickel positive electrodes. The primary advantage of NMCA materials is the partial replacement of cobalt with aluminum, which also improves structural stability by introducing manganese. However, the complexity of the synthesis process still poses challenges for large-scale production.

Currently, NMCA quaternary materials predominantly feature polycrystalline structures. Their maturity in processing and overall performance make them more suitable for the demands of high-energy density batteries, while single-crystal systems remain in the technical development stage.
